Genius Hour

This system was later adopted by teachers and used in the classroom so that students could discover their passion. Adding structure to a Genius Hour will keep students informed. “The quality of our first few projects was poor because students were playing and bored,” said Morley, a fifth-grade teacher in Georgia. Genius Hour gives students the opportunity to explore their interests in a classroom.

My Genius Clock class is set up so that once the students have mastered the content Monday through Thursday, they can spend the whole Friday doing their Genius Clock projects. That means I teach my class better Monday through Thursday.

Genius Hour

When the time came to introduce Genius Hour, I created a chart filled with all the questions and ideas that were circling around in my students’ brains, such as “Why does it rain? As I got further down the road with my plans for Genius Hour, I identified the curricular connections I needed to take into consideration.

The first time you introduce yourself, you need to give students enough time to do classroom research so they know what they want. At the end of the course, ask the class what their individual learning process is and why they wanted to learn it. Most teachers rate students based on their work ethic each day of the process. Your ability to challenge yourself and consciously engage in the learning process is fundamental and determines your success in class.

Students spend hours in their spare time practising skills that are fluent in the classroom. This is an opportunity for students to pursue their interests, ideas and questions in the hope of lifelong learning. Giuliani uses the term “itch to scratch yourself” to describe the way in which seemingly random projects of passion turn from a waste of time to a once in a lifetime opportunity. This is what happens when you listen to a podcast portion of a project that engages you and you realize that what you learn becomes stories that you incorporate into your history class.

Creating Lifelong Learners – The goal of Genius Hour is to instill a love of learning. Encouraging students to develop their passion can pave the way for future careers. The Genius Clock is like giving students a magical key that opens the door to a world they have never seen before.

You also need to provide basic rules for staying focused. Throughout this type of lesson, it is inherently more informal and rules that keep noise levels low still apply. On the research side of Genius Hour, students will be able to find relevant and reliable sources of information and develop the skills to evaluate the information provided. Finding ways to make learning exciting, and providing students with the opportunity to explore their passions and be creative, is always important.
